Sadly, 75 per cent of Skopje buildings were destroyed during a 1963 earthquake, but the city's Kale Fortress and old bazaar still stand. Visitors can drive their car hire in Skopje Airport across a 6th century stone bridge to Matka Canyon, 20 minutes' drive away, or Vodno Mountain, Macedonia's highest point and where the world's largest Christian cross stands.
Despite Skopje's relatively northern location, it experiences surprisingly hot and humid summers from June to August. Snow and rain frequently fall during the cold winters. Autumn may be the best visiting time as temperatures are fairly mild and rainfall is relatively scarce. Spring temperatures are also fairly mild, but April and June are among Skopje's rainiest months. Precipitation is also rather frequent from October to December.
Skopje stands at the intersection of the north-south Corridor X and Corridor VIII east-west European transportation corridors. The E75 motorway leads as far north as Norway and as far south as the Greek island of Crete. Skopje's signs are inscribed in both Latin and Cyrillic lettering, fuel costs are less than in Western Europe and roads are in good condition. Always carry a detailed map and motorway toll change on all journeys.
