Saint Denis can be considered a city in its own right but has been engulfed by Paris and now forms a suburb of the French capital. Like many of the areas on the outskirts this makes a reasonable alternative to the heart of Paris particularly if you combine your stay with cheap car hire in Saint Denis to get around the city.

This part of the city is popular with visitors as it is the home of the Stade de France that hosts many of the city's top sporting events and is close to car hire in Saint Denis. When you consider the attendances at some events it is easy to understand why hotel rooms are plentiful making this one of the more reasonably priced parts of Paris.

Saint Denis takes its name from the first bishop of Paris who, it is believed, carried his head the 10kms from the centre of the city to the town after being executed. The journey into the heart of Paris can now be taken a lot less painfully with car rental in Saint Denis.

The city became a place of pilgrimage and the Gothic Basilique de Saint Denis, used as a final resting place for the French monarchy, was built. This is the biggest attraction in Saint Denis and tours include interesting information about the history of the country and its former royal leaders.

The area in and around Saint Denis was largely industrial but the decline of manufacturing during the 1980s and 1990s has resulted in much of that disappearing.
